JUHI Fuel Riser Removal

Eifers was contracted to remove an unused fuel cell pipeline riser at Delta D9, Melbourne Airport in 2016. The work required saw cutting, slurry removal, lifting and disposal of the existing concrete pavement slabs, all within the operational airfield.

Our crew manually removed the pavement and concrete with electric and pneumatic jackhammers, taking caution of the live fuel pipelines around them. This task proved challenging due to the limited access and significant depth of the excavation. Along the way, we had to ensure the site was dewatered and safe to operate in.

Our team covered the pipeline in concrete flush with the top of the subgrade; when this was finished, we were then able to conduct the dowel drilling and the placement of the epoxy set dowels into the surrounding pavement. The dowels were coated with emulsion to allow for the movement of the concrete in a z-like shape. Steel formwork shutters were installed, which then enabled us to pour the concrete in stages. The concrete was completed with a broom-like finish before being cured.

In the following week, V-notch saw cutting and joint sealing was completed. Where the surrounding concrete had been minimally damaged during pavement removal, we applied our FastPatch repair technology.

Eifers  is pleased to have safely and successfully completed all contracted works with expert workmanship and quality.
